Now here's the kicker - if it tries to generate a new portal and it can't due to geographic conditions (solid netherrack, endless lava ocean, etc.), then it will have to improvise. if it finds no portals within range, it will generate a new portal. if it finds multiple portals within range, it will attempt to use the nearest portal. if it finds an existing portal within range, it will attempt to use that portal. every time you go through a portal the game checks the other dimension for an existing portal. Second, portals don't have a "hard" link to each other. remember this whenever you encounter something that isn't behaving as the internet tells you it does. everything in this game is random and randomly generated. Now I thought maybe I had the linking backwards so I started again from two portals at 0,0 and then created a second portal in the nether, but then a second portal is created in the overworld when I make a portal farther than 0,16 in the nether.Ĭan someone help me understand what I’m missing?įirst of all - portals aren't perfect. Then when I try to enter the nether from a new portal at 0,400 in the overworld it creates a new portal in the nether instead of taking me to the original like I expect. I placed my first overworld portal at 0,0 x and z coordinates then destroyed the automatically placed portal in the nether and rebuilt it at 0,0 as well. More specifically, I’m playing on pc (Java edition 1.6) and I went to creative mode super flat to test. I’m not seeing this though, when I create a portal on the overworld it will generate a new portal in the nether unless it’s within about 300 blocks. Everything I read online says that a portal on the overworld up to 1024 blocks away should link to the same portal in the nether. So I just started playing Minecraft for the first time a little while ago, and now I’m trying to figure out nether portals. (#spoiler) = neat!
